Poland’s envoy in Paris faces charges in diploma fraud case
Jan R., Poland’s representative in Paris, was taken into custody shortly before the Christmas period and has been charged with multiple offenses linked to what has become known as the Collegium Humanum affair, according to reports. Investigators allege that he paid a sum exceeding 9,000 zloty ($2,500) to the head of a private university in return for a counterfeit postgraduate Executive MBA certificate.
According to the case file, the diplomat is accused of later relying on the allegedly fabricated diploma when seeking a seat on the supervisory board of a bank. He was detained earlier this month by anti-corruption investigators and has since been temporarily suspended from carrying out his duties at the Polish Embassy in the French capital.
The investigation extends beyond the ambassador and includes several other individuals.
Among them are a former lawmaker from the Law and Justice party, a woman accused of assisting in issuing false credentials, and a businessman alleged to have provided repeated financial inducements to the university rector. Prosecutors claim the former legislator falsely presented himself as having influence within Poland’s education authorities to help arrange a fraudulent psychology degree, while the businessman is accused of paying for multiple fake EMBA diplomas.
Altogether, four suspects are facing a combined total of 15 criminal counts. All have already been questioned by investigators. If found guilty, those charged could receive prison sentences of up to a decade, according to officials.
The private institution at the center of the case later underwent a rebranding in mid-2024, changing its name to the Varsovia School of Business and Applied Sciences.
